In a move that could reshape Nigeria’s opposition landscape, SDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, has confirmed that preliminary discussions are underway with Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi about potentially joining the Social Democratic Party.
Speaking on Sunday Politics, Adebayo clarified that while no official defection has occurred, “serious discussions” are being held through the politicians’ associates. He emphasized that the SDP welcomes only those aligned with its core values of social justice, democratic reform, and national unity.
This development comes amid internal crises in both the PDP and Labour Party following the 2023 elections. Analysts suggest a potential Atiku-Obi alignment under the SDP could significantly shift the political balance ahead of 2027.
Though neither politician has publicly commented, behind-the-scenes meetings and media silence hint at strategic realignments. The SDP, once linked to the late MKO Abiola, is reportedly rebranding to position itself as a credible alternative to Nigeria’s dominant parties.
